Adventists in Southern Luzon Visit Lipa City Mayor to Offer Prayer and Support
The workforce of the Southern Luzon Philippine Union Mission (SLPUM) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, along with church members from nearby local congregations, paid a courtesy visit to Honorable Eric B. Africa, re-elected mayor of Lipa City, on Monday, May 26, 2025, to extend their heartfelt congratulations and offer a prayer of blessing for his continued service to the community.

Spearheaded by the Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL) Department, the visit reflects the Church’s commitment to nurturing positive and respectful relationships with public officials. It is also part of PARL’s broader mission to promote religious freedom, dispel misconceptions about the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and engage meaningfully with the wider community.
During the visit, Pastor Jose Orbe, Jr. SLPUM PARL Director led in prayer, asking for God’s guidance, strength, and wisdom for Mayor Africa as he enters a new term. He prayed that the mayor be protected from corruption and be granted the courage to lead with integrity and compassion. Pastor Orbe also lifted in prayer the mayor’s team and outgoing Batangas Vice-Governor Mark Leviste, who was present during the meeting.
The gesture underscored the Adventist Church’s belief in praying for those in authority, as instructed in Scripture. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” —1 Timothy 2:1–4 (ESV)
Regardless of political affiliation or outcome, Christians are called to uphold their moral commitment to Christ by interceding for leaders. While private prayer is powerful, allowing leaders to hear those prayers personally is also a meaningful way to affirm support, express spiritual solidarity, and remind them that they are not alone in their calling to serve.
