Pruned for Harvest: Workers’ Spiritual Retreat
“Hindi ka makakaharvest kung hindi mo i-remove ang mga sagabal.” These words from Exequiel Morada, a retiring South Luzon Philippine Union Mission (SLPUM) worker, captured the essence of the recently concluded Workers’ Spiritual Retreat held at the Literature Ministry Seminary on January 24-25, 2025. His wisdom resonated deeply with every worker in attendance: before one can reap a bountiful harvest, distractions must be removed, priorities must be realigned, and faith must be strengthened.
With the theme “Pruned for Harvest” from John 15:2, the retreat became a sacred time of reflection and renewal for more than 30 dedicated workers. Through trials and hardships, God lovingly prunes His people—not to harm them, but to shape them for greater spiritual fruitfulness.

For Dan Vicente, one of the newest workforce members, the retreat provided a fresh perspective on growth. “Pruning is painful, but it prepares us for something better. God removes what is unnecessary or unfruitful in our lives so we can fully focus on His purpose and bear lasting fruit.”
More than just a learning time, the retreat fostered deep bonding among the workers. Walking together in prayer and reflection, they unburdened their hearts, sharing struggles, hopes, and renewed commitments. The retreat encouraged genuine connection, reminding everyone they are not alone in the mission—they are a family, called to serve together.
A significant highlight of the retreat was the discussion of SLPUM’s new core values, presented by President Pastor Gerardo Cajobe. He emphasized that these values—Spirituality, Leadership, Partnership, Unity, and Mission—will guide the mission’s workforce. Spirituality keeps them deeply rooted in Christ, leadership empowers them to serve with vision and dedication, partnership strengthens their collaboration with fellow believers, unity ensures harmony in the mission, and mission drives them to fulfill the Great Commission. With these values as their foundation, the workers embraced a renewed commitment to their calling.
The retreat’s culmination was both humbling and powerful. Pastor Adriel Gavenia, Ministerial Secretary, led the ordinance of Christ’s humility and sacrifice—foot-washing and the Lord’s Supper. In that sacred moment, hearts were laid bare, and every worker recommitted to a life of servant leadership, just as Christ exemplified.
By the end of the retreat, the SLPUM family was no longer just a team of workers—they were transformed disciples. With renewed faith, strengthened bonds, and a clearer vision, they stepped forward, ready to embrace whatever it took to serve God and His church. Pruned, purified, and prepared, they are poised for an abundant harvest.
